Bakelite Hylam - Keeping Pace with Changing Times

Change is the byword of Life driven by Father Time and Mother Nature. Everything changes, times change, people change, and cities change, countries change, and the world changes and so do companies around the world. The world today is a global village where national boundaries do not count for much. What matters today is Economics. The planet Earth has shrunk, thanks to technology and growing diversifying nature of the world. Those who are loathe accepting the change factor need to get their heads examined and fine-tuned to understand the ground realities. The city of Hyderabadhas been seeing a lot of development of late, and one such entity, which has been taking part in the change process, is Bakelite Hylam. It’s a company which has seen it all and gone through it all. Believe it or not, it has its roots on the same wavelength as our great country India itself. Amazing isn’t it, but then that is the reality.

It still exists and what’s more going strong. It’s a creditable feat. And that comes about only when one adopts the mantra of Change Factor. Wallowing in the past does not count for much, it’s just only a picture of memory and one has to look to the future. The name BAKELITE is in a way reflects this, the past has been baked and the future has been lighted. Its history, products that it manufactures and other such factors all make for exciting stuff and bring about a whiff of nostalgia. C’mon lets have a look at the same.

History

Back in the year 1909, a doctor called Dr Bakeland came across something, which changed his fortunes and all those around him. It brought about a change in future generation people. It is not fiction, but hard-core truth. He discovered thermo set plastic later referred to by others as Bakelite. This reference itself was a tribute to him and he richly deserved it. Discovery led to something bigger, a UK company called Bakelite Xylonite got into the act, that of, manufacturing the same Bakelite. The British having their presence in India thanks due to their colonial rule sensed the feeling of a new independent India; the year 1947 saw a new India and a new company called Hyderabad Laminated Products Ltd. The ball got rolling, initially the company was a state enterprise of the Nizam of Hyderabad, and manufacturing laminates for the electrical and construction industries. The two products were marketed by the then 100% British-owned Bakelite India Private Ltd.

Times changed, the year 1969 was a watershed in the company’s history. The two companies Hyderabad Laminated Products Ltd and Bakelite India Private Ltd became one entity and came to be known as Bakelite Hylam Ltd, a name that has struck to date. At the time of merger, BXL Plastic Materials Group, U K held 50% shares and the State Government of Andhra Pradesh held 30% shares. Then again Father Time got into the act and in the year 1982 the company brought down the foreign share holdings to 39.99%, which lays to this date the same.
